Frequently Asked Questions
What is DOT‑O‑MATIC 3000?
DOT‑O‑MATIC 3000 is a free, web-based SVG stipple generator that converts images into scalable vector dot art. All processing happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
How does it work?
Simply upload an image, adjust the settings (dot size, count, color, etc.), and click Generate. The tool uses advanced algorithms to place dots based on image brightness, then optimizes their distribution using Voronoi relaxation. You can download the result as an SVG file.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No! All image processing happens entirely in your web browser using JavaScript. Your images never leave your device and are never uploaded to any server. This ensures complete privacy and security.
What image formats are supported?
DOT‑O‑MATIC supports common image formats including PNG, JPG, JPEG, and GIF. The tool processes images up to 8000 pixels on the longest side for optimal performance.
What is the output format?
The output is an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file. SVG files are vector-based, meaning they can be scaled to any size without quality loss. They're perfect for printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and digital design work.
What do the settings do?
Dot Count: Number of dots in the pattern (more = more detail, slower processing)
Min/Max Dot Size: Size range for dots (smaller in dark areas, larger in bright areas)
Gamma Adjust: Controls brightness curve (lower = emphasize dark areas)
Dot Padding: Spacing between dots (prevents overlap)
Voronoi Iterations: Optimization passes (more = better distribution, slower)
Colour Mode: Single color, source image colors, or gradient based on brightness
Why is generation taking so long?
Processing time depends on several factors: dot count (higher = slower), image size, Voronoi iterations, and your computer's performance. Complex images with many dots and high iteration counts will take longer. Try reducing dot count or Voronoi iterations for faster results.
Can I use the generated SVG commercially?
You retain all rights to the SVG output generated from your images. You can use the generated files for any purpose, including commercial use. However, make sure you have the rights to use the source image you upload.
What is "Prevent Dot Overlap"?
When enabled, the algorithm ensures dots never overlap each other. This creates cleaner, more professional results. The Dot Padding setting controls how much space is maintained between dots.
What is "Align to Grid"?
This option places dots on a regular grid pattern instead of random positions. Use Grid Spacing to control the density. This creates a more structured, uniform appearance.
What is "Lock Dot Ratio"?
When enabled, changing the min or max dot size automatically adjusts the other to maintain the same ratio. This helps keep the size relationship consistent while experimenting.
What is "Hover Zoom"?
When enabled, hovering your mouse over the canvas shows a 4x magnified view in the thumbnail area on the left. This helps you see fine details in the stipple pattern.
What is "Ignore Transparency"?
When enabled, transparent pixels in your image are treated as white pixels. Dots will be placed in transparent areas. When disabled (default), transparent areas are skipped.
What units should I use?
Choose units (inches or millimeters) that match your final output size. For example, if you're creating a 24" x 24" poster, use inches. If you're working with a 300mm x 300mm design, use millimeters. The dot sizes will scale accordingly.
Can I adjust colors?
Yes! In Single mode, all dots use the Main Dot Colour. In Gradient mode, dots transition between Main Dot Colour (bright areas) and Secondary Dot Colour (dark areas). In Source Colour mode, dots use colors from the original image.
Why do dots look different sizes?
Dots are sized based on image brightness. Darker areas get smaller dots, brighter areas get larger dots. This creates the stipple effect. Adjust Gamma Adjust to change how dramatically sizes vary.
Is DOT‑O‑MATIC 3000 free?
Yes, completely free! The service is supported through advertising (Google AdSense). No registration, no accounts, no subscriptions required. Just load an image and generate your stipple art.
Can I use it offline?
After the initial page load, most functionality works offline since all processing happens in your browser. However, you'll need an internet connection to load the page initially.
What browsers are supported?
DOT‑O‑MATIC works in modern browsers that support HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript. This includes Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. Older browsers may not work properly.
